Disease Database Reviews

| Search |

The Diseases Database went live on the web in August 2000. During January 2007 the site served an average 20,000 page impressions to over 5000 distinct users per day. (These figures exclude robots / crawlers and the site is configured to minimise repeat downloads of pages). A high proportion of attributable hits indicate users in academic, healthcare or pharmaceutical industry institutions. Many users revisit (~500 users per day are on a second or subsequent visit).

British Medical Journal: BMJ 2001;322:872 (7 April)

"An interesting way of using the web can be found at www.diseasesdatabase.com. Type a single symptom, sign, disease, non-branded drug name or investigation result on an inhouse search engine, and it generates a list of associated subjects. In turn the search term can also be submitted to some highly respected external internet resources, generating an impressive range of useful links. The best way to understand this resource is simply to use it."

Lancet 2003;361:9365 (12 April)

"...a searchable interface that indexes (by topic) thousands of pages from reliable sources such as the Cochrane Library, CancerNet, and so forth. Users can "drill down" more deeply into each topic for signs, symptoms, risk factors, and related topics. It is an intriguing concept; click on "What is in the Database?" to get the most out of the site."
